Widespread arms ownership, in particular of guns, increases the risk of violence.

This is particularly evident in the US, where the number of victims of gun violence is eight to ten times higher than in other highly developed countries (“high income countries”) in relation to the population.

Disarmament and the destruction of weapons is often part of a peacebuilding strategy after a war or armed conflict:

For example, after World War II, the Allies demilitarized the German Wehrmacht. Or in 2016, the Colombian peace agreement between the government and the FARC, after which numerous weapons were melted down and turned into peace memorials.
